A 3.5 star Fae Fantasy read

What Lies Beyond the Veil
Harper L. Woods
When I read "What Lies Beyond the Veil, I did not expect to pick up another Fae series for a while, not until my most anticipated sequels were out. This one though…I am still thinking about it hours later… That's how you know I’m hooked and wanted to see what happens next. Harper L. Woods managed to scratch my Fantasy Romance itch where other post-hangover book reads just did not hit the mark. Post reading, I found out it's a 6 series installment….what did I get myself into?
Harper sets up her world but we only know just as much as our heroine Estelle AND without a massive info-dump which first installment fantasy novels are pretty known for. I’m not going to lie. There are some plot devices which are just…well….convenient to say the least, very early on in the book. The concept feels a bit fresh in a sense with the introduction and the circumstances with the FAE mates and the back story intrigues enough to want to spark your curiosity for the full story of the past but also what’s to come. I will say it can be a bit predictable at times, but I’ve been told I am pretty good at figuring out the plot of these novels by now.
There are just too many aspect of the world buidling in this series that are intriguing which includes the Fae mate marks, the vernaculum, the workings of childbearing and marked mates, including the whole god origin story. Three-thirds through this first book, Harper foreshadows what I expect will happen in the next book regarding the official claiming. Otherwise, I feel like the next book will help set up larger plots which I suspect will get political and open up a whole new world to our protagonist. I would certainly like to know more about Alfheim and the wild hunt.
Callum is just a mix of sweet, overbearing, and down-right straight up as they come… or at least as one can be. Is he my favorite male protagonist? Far from it, but I think I'll give him a few books to see whether he grows on me. His possessiveness can be a bit much, but I’ll forgive him considering how long it’s been.
Let’s see if Harper can pay off what’s to come and really get me invested..
To conclude, I would recommend this series for a mood read but don't expect to be blown away on the first book. There are three out of the rumored six book Of Flesh & Bone series out now.
Release dates have been pushed back for the fourth installment, "What Sleeps Within The Cove" of the series at this time. At the time of writing, two weeks ago, pre-orders were cancelled as seen on the Harper L. Woods Instagram post.
